American football game interrupted for 60 seconds by outbreak of rugby.

ETA: Warning: you may want to turn the volume of the commentary down a little. It's apparently too screechy for some of the more sensitive members of my flist.

According to ESPN, an 81-yard, 15-lateral touchdown. Just imagine how exciting 'football' would be if they did that all the time, wore less sissy padding and didn't stop the game every few seconds?

[info]uberbitsch subjected me to a number of World Cup rugby matches when I was her hostage guest last month.

American "football" (football is the game where only the goalies can use their hands) leaves me cold, but rugby just confuses me. I mean, aside from the homoeroticism. That part is clear as day.

My confusion on watching this clip is based in how I understand neither American football nor Rugby. It did seem like something exciting was going on though!

As I understand it, there are two typical plays in American football: they chuck it forwards and someone runs as far and as fast as they can before the hulking big guys on the other team knock him down, or they dispense with the forward-chucking and make do with the running bit. You're only allowed to chuck it forwards once, but can throw it around sideways and backwards ('lateral') as much as you like - just nobody ever does (I think it's seen as risky or something).

In rugby (and I simplify grossly), it's pretty much all you do - pass the ball sideways and backwards and try to make space for someone to run through the other team and score.

So this team, needing to travel nearly the full length of the pitch to score a touchdown and win, went for the 'play rugby' option and pulled it off, to the general disbelief of everyone in the stadium (I think that's why the rest of the team comes out to celebrate and the blue guys are lying on the floor exhausted and distraught).

Wow, that's all i can say. That's A LOT of passing but sure is breath-taking American football. I've seen one backpass a couple of time but this? It's a real shame they don't choose this option more often.

btw, I agree, it's seems to be a crunch time clincher.
